Microsoft and developer The Coalition have unleashed the Swarm in all-new images for Gears of War 4, this time shifting the focus to spotlight the shooter’s solo campaign.

Set a full 25 years after the catastrophic destruction of the planet Sera, Gears 4 chronicles the journey of J.D. Fenix – son of series stalwart Marcus Fenix – who is forced to fend off that aforementioned Swarm alongside fellow COG soldiers Delmont “Del” Walker and Kait Diaz to safeguard humanity’s survival.

Retaining the franchise’s love for wonderfully over-the-top and grimy weaponry, the gallery above spotlights some of the alien threat that you’ll be locking horns with, and the chainsaws you’ll be using to cut them down to size – in every sense of the word.

However you decide to approach the single-player campaign in Gears of War 4, you don’t have to do so alone. Much to the delight of long-term fans, The Coalition is planning to support split-screen across the board. Just be warned that said mode will be locked at 30fps to ensure stability throughout.

Gears of War 4 has zeroed in on a October 11 release date, when The Coalition’s sci-fi sequel will make its premiere on Xbox One – and possibly PC soon thereafter. Those who wish to hop into the sci-fi action can do so thanks to the open beta test, which expanded to all Xbox Live Gold members just yesterday, April 25. Having opened for those who picked up last year’s Ultimate Edition on April 18, expect the testing to conclude for all users on May 1.
