Shirley Curry, affectionately known as “Skyrim Grandma,” has officially announced that she is retiring from uploading Skyrim videos. Curry fans rejoice, though, because she is still on track to appear as an NPC in a highly anticipated new game when it launches.
Curry shared the news on September 29, 2025, in a YouTube video titled “My ‘Goodbye’ to Skyrim.” In it, she declared she would no longer be uploading Skyrim content, explaining that over time, the joy of creating Skyrim playthroughs had faded.
Why did Shirley Curry retire?
Citing her age, fatigue, and a waning sense of fulfillment in her content creation, Curry described in her farewell video how she had repeatedly tried introducing new characters or story ideas but quickly lost interest:
“Every time I come up with a new idea … I may make one or two or three … and then I’m bored again,” she said. “So that’s why I’m going to stop uploading anything to do with Skyrim.”
She also noted that the nature of the comments she received played a role in her choice. Whereas earlier in her career she recalled deeper conversations with longtime viewers, in recent years, most of her feedback has been “Hi grandma” or “I love you grandma” from younger fans, messages she says don’t reflect her target audience.
Skyrim, or The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, released in 2011, is a beloved open-world RPG allowing player modification. Curry began posting Skyrim gameplay videos around 2015. Over the years, she developed a devoted following who affectionately called themselves her “grandkids.” Her content wasn’t just about gameplay; she often narrated stories, role-played characters, and treated her “grandkids” like family.
Look for Curry in Skyrim VI
Curry’s fame grew to the point that fans launched petitions asking Skyrim-maker Bethesda to include her as a character in The Elder Scrolls VI. Bethesda responded by publicly saying they intend to include her in some form. Bethesda has yet to confirm a release date for The Elder Scrolls VI.
Though she’s retiring from Skyrim content, Curry will continue her YouTube channel in a limited capacity. She pledged to post occasional vlogs “when I have something to talk to you guys about,” and encouraged communication via email or comments.
