Taking advantage of the buzz surrounding the recent release of Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, a handheld modified port, Nintendo has just announced that it has a brand new Donkey Kong Country game in the works for Wii U. Expected to launch later this year, the newly-announced instalment will mark the series’ first foray into high-definition, and will be dubbed Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.

What was shown during Nintendo Direct E3 was a rather lengthy, and action-packed trailer, which featured quite a bit of gameplay content and showed off new camera angles. From Donkey jumping from one giraffe to another to more classic platforming sections, there was a lot of impressive-looking stuff to see.

The highlight for us longtime fans of the series, however, was the reintroduction of Dixie Kong, whose hair will allow her to helicopter from platform to platform. It was only generally mentioned that she will play differently than the others, though, as they all combine to battle for their home island, against a bunch of viking intruders from the north sea.

As mentioned above, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze should hit retail store shelves (and the e-Shop) before the end of 2013. Hopefully that will be the case, because it looks great, and hardly anything beats the Donkey Kong Country series.
