Has Square Enix ‘won’ this year’s E3? With Nintendo yet to declare its own reveals it’s too soon to tell, though the famed Final Fantasy creator is certainly a frontrunner. Last night, the publisher unveiled new footage for several high profile projects – the long-awaited Final Fantasy VII Remake among them – but this year, it certainly saved the best for last. Before the numerous guests departed and the stage darkened, Square gave the world its very first glimpse at none other than Marvel’s Avengers.
Sadly, developer Crystal Dynamics stopped just short of revealing any gameplay for the superhero action-adventure, though viewers were treated to a visual feast featuring Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, Thor and Captain America. As confirmed on-stage, all five characters will be playable from day one, with new roster additions and regions to explore scheduled to arrive at a later date via DLC.
Before even allowing skepticism to creep in over the oft-controversial monetization model, however, Crystal immediately followed one announcement with another in confirming that both types of content will be available, free of charge, from the get-go. Furthermore, the developer confirmed to rapturous applause that neither pay-to-win purchases or loot boxes will be added to the title in any form. With that said, cosmetic skins and other customization options weren’t ruled out, so don’t be surprised to see such features show up.
Either way, Crystal Dynamics is off to a jolly good start with its first foray into live service territory. Does it have the chops to pull off one of the most ambitious crossovers in recent memory, though? It’s too soon to tell, but all signs currently point to the answer being a resounding yes.
Marvel’s Avengers is out early next year for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC and Google Stadia.
