Earlier today during the latest Nintendo Direct Presentation, The Big N announced that Sonic will return as one of the playable characters in Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and 3DS.

Originally introduced to the series as one of the few third-party fighters in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Sonic’s inclusion in the upcoming game was anything but a given — especially since the developers are pairing down the roster. Now that we know the Blue Blur is back, we can only wonder if Snake and his cardboard box will show up next.

With the confirmation of Sonic’s return, the total roster for Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS is now up to the following seventeen brawlers; Sonic, Toon Link (Zelda: Wind Waker style), Peach, Luigi, Pikmin & Olimar, Villager (Animal Crossing), Mega Man, Wii Fit Trainer, Mario, Donkey Kong, Link (Zelda: Twilight Princess style), Samus, Kirby, Fox (Star Fox), Pikachu, Bowser, and Pit (Kid Icarus).

As part of today’s announcement Nintendo provided nine Wii U screenshots, and a lone 3DS image, of Sonic going toe to toe with the other Super Smash Bros. characters. Check them all out in the gallery, and let us who else you would like to see in the final game in the comments section. Personally, I’m still pulling for a giant Chibi-Robo.
