Nintendo Direct hype causes police incident on California college campus

A once-in-a-lifetime event?

Nintendo is planning to showcase a number of its hotly anticipated projects during a press conference this evening, but who knew the hype was so intense that it would actually involve the police?

The Japanese gaming company has a dedicated fanbase that has proven its devotion time and again, whether it involves religiously purchasing every Nintendo Switch game on the market or just being there to match the company’s energy when promoting a new title.

Well, that unwavering loyalty reached absurd new heights today when the CSUF Police Department investigated a potential threat to the college campus after a student sent a “vaguely” threatening email to one of their professors. Apparently, the email brought a “once-in-a-lifetime event” to the instructor’s attention, urging them to cancel the class “for the good of humanity.”

Hilariously enough, after “hours of investigation” by the department’s detectives, they realized the event in question was today’s Nintendo Direct. You can read Acting Chief Scot Willey’s full statement regarding the debacle here:

We know people really miss Link and can’t possibly wait another couple of months for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but this is just ridiculous. Side-splittingly hilarious in retrospect, but ridiculous and foolish all the same.

What’s done is done, so people are asking the real question here: Will the students be able to watch the showcase in peace now?

Fellow gamers are taking this as just another proof that the whole community is an oppressed minority.
