As promised, Oculus has opened up pre-orders for the first consumer-ready version of the Oculus Rift, revealing the asking price for the VR headset to be $599.
That’s for the base model, and as the company revealed yesterday, early adopters won’t be able to purchase the Oculus Touch controllers until a later date, which have now slipped to Q2 2016 due to slight design issues.
“On Touch hardware, we’ve made significant advances in ergonomics, and we’re implementing many changes that make Touch even more comfortable, reliable, and natural. We’re also implementing changes that improve hand pose recognition. We’re also outputting larger numbers of pre-production runs, which means we can get a lot more Touch hardware in the hands of developers who need it.”
There is, however, two free games bundled in under the $600 price tag: Lucky’s Tale and CCP Games’ acclaimed dogfighting sim EVE: Valkyrie. Moreover, thanks to Microsoft’s support, an Xbox One controller is tossed into the package, with an Oculus remote, a VR sensor and of course, the headset itself. Still, whether that will be enough to tempt would-be buyers remains to be seen.
According to the official page, the Oculus Rift is expected to ship in April.
