Today’s Super Smash Bros.-centric E3 event, hosted by series director Masahiro Sakurai, kicked off with a big announcement regarding the latest familiar face to join the crossover fighter’s roster, following in the footsteps of Miis and Palutena. As revealed through a new trailer, the next newcomer to the series is none other than the arcade icon Pac-Man.

While his default look closely resembles the original game’s promotional art and later entries, the footage shown of Pac-Man in action indicates that certain moves will temporarily transform him into the classic circle shape that gamers are familiar with. It also appears that some of his moves will represent other retro Namco titles, such as Galaga and Dig Dug. The 3DS version of the game will also receive a level modeled after a classic maze from the original Pac-Man.

After the reveal trailer ended, Sakurai noted that Pac-Man’s design for this game was mostly influenced by the 1980s arcade game Pac-Land, as opposed to more recent redesigns. He then played a demo match with other Nintendo employees to showcase the character in motion.

We will continue to keep you updated on Super Smash Bros. as more news becomes available. For now, check out the trailer and screenshots announcing Pac-Man’s inclusion below.
