Well guys, its been a good, long – and sometimes surprising run – for Super Smash Bros. Wii U over the last year, but it looks like post-launch support for the title is finally coming to an end sooner rather than later.

On their official website, Nintendo have just announced that the final Nintendo Direct event for the popular beat ’em up series will be held next week, December 15 at 4PM Pacific Time. As well as more details for Final Fantasy VII guest character Cloud Strife, the Big N are promising more news and announcements will be made for both the Wii U and 3DS versions of the game before time is called on the digital briefing.

If this is the final Nintendo Direct ever for Super Smash Bros. Wii U, then Nintendo will probably have some surprised tucked away in an effort to give the game a big send-off. Could there be another guest character in store? So far, we’ve had huge icons along the lines of Sonic The Hedgehog, Solid Snake, Ryu from Street Fighter and Pac-Man introduced to the series, so nobody’s exempt from consideration.

Our bet (hope)? Sephiroth. Come on Ninty, make it so!
