The final nail has been hammered into Prey 2‘s proverbial coffin, as Bethesda has officially confirmed that the bounty-hunting sequel has been cancelled. Of course, with all of the turmoil surrounding the game’s development and the fact that it hadn’t been talked about for a while, this news comes as no surprise at all.

While speaking to representatives of CNet at PAX Australia, Bethesda Vice President Pete Hines finally put an end to all of the rumours that had been circulating around what seemed to be a doomed project.

“It was game we believed in, but we never felt that it got to where it needed to be – we never saw a path to success if we finished it,” Hines said.

“It wasn’t up to our quality standard and we decided to cancel it. It’s no longer in development. That wasn’t an easy decision, but it’s one that won’t surprise many folks given that we hadn’t been talking about it.

“Human Head Studios is no longer working on. It’s a franchise we still believe we can do something with — we just need to see what that something is.”

Prey 2 — which was set to star a US Marshall who’d been kidnapped and taken to a strange planet — made people talk after a visceral debut trailer. However, the planned sequel to 2006’s Prey was not to be. At least, not in that incarnation.

Here’s hoping that Bethesda will start work on a new version of Prey 2 in the coming years, because the IP has potential. The first game was quite fun, and I’d definitely like to play another.
