PS4 Exclusive Days Gone Unearths Impressive Gameplay Demo, But No Release Date

Deacon St. John trudges through the apocalypse in the latest Days Gone gameplay demo, encountering zombies, undead bears, but no release date.

Developer Sony Bend was in attendance at last night’s E3 presentation to offer up another look at Days Gone, the PS4 exclusive rooted in a dark and dangerous open world.

You play as Deacon St. John, a character that wouldn’t look out of place in the Sons of Anarchy, as he trudges through the apocalypse, encountering zombies – they’re called Freakers, for the record. Bend’s long-in-development exclusive was first unveiled at E3 last year, which led many to believe that the studio would be ready to announce an exact release date by the time the lights went down at E3 2017. Alas, that wasn’t the case, but there’s no question that Days Gone continues to impress with its lush environments, not to mention those relentless swarms of Freakers.

But as is often the case in apocalyptic storytelling, players will have to deal with human enemies, too – not unlike The Walking Dead‘s mantra: fight the dead, fear the living. Granted, a narrative involving a gruff former outlaw stumbling through an apocalyptic setting isn’t one to rip up the rulebook, but Days Gone has us intrigued nonetheless.

Here’s the official description:

Take on the role of former outlaw biker Deacon St. John: a drifter, a bounty hunter, a wandering vestige of humanity. In world devastated by a global pandemic St. John eschews the ‘safe’ wilderness encampments set up by mankind’s last survivors and takes his chances on the broken roads.

Set against the scarred, volcanic backdrop of the Pacific Northwest, Days Gone invites you to explore a world ravaged by degenerate human monsters known only as Freakers. Fight your way across the desolate landscape in search of supply, resources and, above all else, a reason to go on.

Days Gone is in development exclusively for PS4, and though Sony Bend is remaining tight-lipped on the release date front, the studio’s apocalyptic IP will surely be with us sometime in 2018 – alongside other PS4 exclusive like God of War and Insomniac’s Spider-Man game.
