In news that is sure to anger those against retailer specific DLC, GameStop announced today that they will be offering an exclusive batch of story mode DLC to those who pre-order Batman: Arkham Knight.

Dubbed the “Red Hood Story Pack,” this DLC will place gamers into the shoes of the titular violent vigilante. This pack joins the previously announced “Harley Quinn Story Pack” DLC, which will also be available to those who pre-order Batman: Arkham Knight from GameStop.

Although the practice of retailer specific DLC has never been a fan favorite, this is not the first time that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has offered exclusive content for their Batman titles. Batman: Arkham City offered a variety of different costumes for Bruce Wayne to don, as well as challenge maps for both The Joker and Robin. Batman: Arkham Origins featured more of the same, as challenge maps centering on Black Mask were the main pre-order hook.

In the comic book world of Batman, the identity of the Red Hood is most commonly associated with two different beings. The first to wear the crimson mask was none other than Batman’s greatest foe, The Joker. Of course, this was pre-chemical exposure, back when the Clown Prince of Crime was no more than just a basic thug.

The other, more recent character to become the Red Hood was former Robin, Jason Todd. Thought to be killed by The Joker, Todd was mysteriously brought back to life in 2005 and sought revenge on the man who murdered him. After beating up The Joker, Todd would take the Red Hood costume for himself and become a dangerous, gun wielding vigilante.

While I’m not exactly thrilled with Batman: Arkham Knight receiving GameStop-specific DLC, I am interested to see how Red Hood plays in comparison to Batman. While he does have plenty of options for subduing foes up close, his marksmanship with firearms should provide a different experience in these missions compared to the usual Arkham formula.

Batman: Arkham Knight will be coming to the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC in 2015.
