Mario Kart will see a release on Nintendo Switch within the first three months of the console’s launch, according to noted Nintendo tipster Emily Rogers. A re-release – of sorts – rather than a full sequel, the Switch’s version of the racer will actually be an updated iteration of the Wii U’s Mario Kart 8, containing all on-disc content and DLC made available for the Wii U.

The rumor is somewhat unsurprising, considering the Switch’s reveal trailer had two players burning rubber around the Yoshi Circuit track introduced to Mario Kart 8 as DLC, but can there be enough new stuff to justify a re-release rather than a full-fledged sequel?

Perhaps. According to Rogers’ sources, a rather sizeable amount of exclusive content will be included on the Switch version, including more new tracks, new characters and, most importantly of all, a rejigged Battle Mode. Considering the aforementioned multiplayer playlist received a fair amount of criticism for feeling like a tacked-on afterthought, the potential changes should go a long way in appealing to players who already own the Wii U version.

As is the case with yesterday’s report concerning The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild‘s release date, all of the above is, at this point, unconfirmed, so for now, take it with a pinch of salt.
