Grand Theft Auto 6 Rumored To Be Set In Multiple Time Periods And Cities

For better or worse, Rockstar Games has a tendency to unveil their upcoming projects only after they're very late into development and nearing release. On the one hand, this ensures that gamers don't have to wait too long to get their hands on the title after an official announcement, and it does seem to mitigate the risk of an unexpected last-minute delay.

For better or worse, Rockstar Games has a tendency to unveil their upcoming projects only after they’re very late into development and nearing release. On the one hand, this ensures that gamers don’t have to wait too long to get their hands on the title after an official announcement, and it does seem to mitigate the risk of an unexpected last-minute delay.

On the other hand, this means that Rockstar tends to go silent for years at a time as they chip away at their next game. As a result, their franchises (which are already popular enough as is) are subject to a steady stream of unconfirmed leaks and rumors. With Red Dead Redemption 2 having released last year to critical acclaim, much of the public’s attention has now been turned towards Grand Theft Auto 6, which, for the record, has yet to be officially announced or even confirmed as of this writing.

As reported by Game Rant though, it looks like a new batch of plot and setting details have leaked, with a good chunk of them echoing rumors that surfaced at the beginning of last month. This new info comes from Reddit user Xambie12, and as always, should be taken with a heaping dose of salt.

Assuming the details turn out to be true, it looks like Grand Theft Auto 6 will be set across multiple time periods and cities. It’ll kick off during the 1970s in Liberty City and follow a biracial drug dealer. Over time, players will begin smuggling cocaine between Liberty and Vice City and eventually end up in prison, exiting a decade later during the ’80s. The game’s epilogue will then be set in the present day, while the online multiplayer mode sticks exclusively to the 1980s. Lastly, it looks like the main antagonist, referred to as “The Mexican,” is reportedly inspired by Javier Bardem’s character from No Country for Old Men.

It bears repeating: all of these leaks have not been confirmed by anyone at Rockstar, so, as always, they shouldn’t be taken as gospel. We don’t expect Grand Theft Auto 6 to be announced this year anyways, but we’re certainly hopeful that it makes an appearance at E3 2020 with a release date on next-gen consoles. It might be wishful thinking, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed.
