Confirming recent rumors, Deep Silver announced today that Saints Row IV will be released on August 20, 2013 in North America and August 23rd internationally, on “current-gen consoles and PC”. Unsurprisingly, the “current-gen consoles” part of this statement does not seem to apply to Nintendo-branded consoles.

As for the content in Saints Row IV, Joystiq has confirmed that the Saints Row The Third Enter The Dominatrix standalone expansion has officially been canceled, and “elements of it” were put into the upcoming game. Deep Silver added, “There will be a director’s cut of Enter the Dominatrix released as DLC when SR4 comes out.”

The story in Saints Row IV sees the Third Street Saints becoming “the leaders of the free world”, as “the head honcho of the Saints has been elected to the Presidency of the United States”. As if that was normal, this is where the plot takes a nose dive into crazy-town.

Apparently, there is a “catastrophic alien invasion, and the aliens have transported the Saints to a bizarro-Steelport simulation”. Naturally, this gives them “gargantuan superpowers”, along with an entire “arsenal of alien weaponry and technology” to use as they “fight to free humanity from alien granddaddy Zinyak’s mental grasp” and escape the simulation.

The superpowers granted by the simulation have turned “each Saint into an ultimate entity of destruction”, as players can use their abilities to “leap over buildings, outrun the fastest sports cars, or send enemies flying with telekinesis in the greatest”.

It is good to see that Volition was able to continue their exploration of Saints Row IV insanity unimpeded by THQ’s financial woes.

At any rate, check out the announcement trailer and the first set of screenshots for Saints Row IV in the gallery below. The game looks to be completely nuts, and well balanced in terms of male vs female nudity.
