Satoru Iwata, esteemed programmer and president of Nintendo, has offered up some fresh details relating to the company’s mysterious Nintendo NX hardware, and how the company wants to “start over from zero” before launching a new piece of hardware.

During Iwata’s recent interview with Nikkei (as translated by Kotaku), the developer outlined the company’s approach to the nascent system, and how he hopes it will surprise players and, ultimately, “change video gaming life” when it makes its eventual debut.

“In the past few years, the idea of what [encompasses] a gaming platform gradually changed,” he said. “If you only expand upon existing hardware, it’s dull. In some shape or form, we’re always thinking about how we want to surprise players as well as our desire to change each person’s video gaming life.”

Given The Big N’s prestigious track record in the hardware space, it’s a tantalizing tidbit of what the future holds for the Nintendo NX. But it hasn’t all be sunshine and rainbows for the Japanese giant, with the flailing sales of the Wii U being the most recent example of a misstep. As a result, Iwata went on to say that the development team is reflecting on past console launches, and what a piece of hardware should offer to the consumer.

Nintendo NX is still likely incubating in R&D within the company, though Iwata’s quotes indicate that it is at the very least beginning to take form. Tell us, how do you think Nintendo plans — and indeed hopes — to shake up the gaming market? Let us know below.
