Square Enix announced today the Tomb Raider reboot, being developed by Crystal Dynamics. Although no further information has been revealed such as the platforms it will release on or the planned release date, we do know it will be an origin story and that the title will simply be Tomb Raider.

Darrell Gallagher, who is the head of Crystal Dynamics, says “Forget everything you knew about Tomb Raider.” He continues, “This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other.

Square also says we’ll see Lara as being “young and inexperienced” in a “journey of an ordinary woman who finds out just how far she must go in order to stay alive.

The full reveal will be in Game Informer’s next issue. For now, we have the cover art (shown above) for January’s issue portraying perhaps a more gritty and realistic Lara than we’ve ever seen before, though of course it’s only a photograph and not the game itself. Along with this is a snippet from January’s Game Informer:

“In our world-exclusive cover story, we uncover a brand-new Lara Croft. Rebooting the Tomb Raider franchise through an origin story wasn’t so much a choice as an act of necessity, according to Crystal Dynamics. Drastic measures were needed. To build an entirely fresh Lara – a culturally relevant hero worth of the attention that once came so effortlessly – they must break her first. In this new adventure – simply titled Tomb Raider – a younger and inexperienced Lara Croft must endure both physical and emotional trauma to survive.”
