With Shinji Mikami’s The Evil Within, Bethesda Softworks hopes to bring the survival horror genre back to the forefront of gamers’ minds. Though we’ll have to wait and see if the Tango Gameworks-developed nightmare manages to help return the genre to its former prominence, it certainly looks like it has the potential to do so.

Today, the aforementioned publisher released a nearly twelve minute-long “extended gameplay video” for the game, and it’s featured below for your viewing pleasure. Take note that, while it’s stylish and good-looking, it’s not for those with weak stomachs.

To set the clip up, it’s important to mention that what you’ll see is the first part of the campaign. This is how Bethesda added context to things via press release means:

Detective Sebastien Castellanos and his partners are called in to investigate a gruesome mass murder. After witnessing a mysterious force slaughter his fellow officers, Sebastian is ambushed and knocked unconscious. When the video opens, he finds his world has been turned upside down. Facing unimaginable terror and fighting for survival in a world where hideous creatures wander among the dead, Sebastian embarks on a frightening journey to unravel who or what is behind this unimaginable evil.

In-development for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PC, Tango’s The Evil Within owns a 2014 launch window.
