For some, the screenshot above will be incredibly poignant and the news that it is in regards to may very well induce a tear or two.

The result of a collaboration between comic creator Dave Gibbons and Revolution Software was Beneath a Steel Sky, which helped define both the adventure genre and the Cyberpunk aesthetic back in 1994. This team has now been revealed to be getting back together for an unknown project.

Talking with Eurogamer at a GameCityNights event in Nottingham last week, Gibbons revealed that when their current projects are finished he and Revolution founder Charles Cecil will once again collaborate:

“We’re developing something – I really shouldn’t say anything more about it – but it’s something I’m quite excited about and it’s in an area I don’t think has been explored, and it isn’t France, and it isn’t Paris and it isn’t catacombs.”

Details of the project are sparse but he also said that it would be:

“Something that combines a lot of the things I’m perhaps best known for, which are a design sense and a sense of symbolism and maybe an obsessive attention to background detail.”

Like anyone who has played Beneath a Steel Sky, I am a massive fan and I can’t think of a reunion that would excite me more as a gamer. Those of you yet to play this classic should sign up at GOG (where it is included for free with all accounts) to adequately prepare yourself for the adventure to come. It may not be a sequel, but it will almost certainly be an instant classic.

Stay tuned as we’ll be sure to keep you updated on what I have temporarily named, Gibbon’s Revolution.
