Video game companies have been slipping in real quality games recently. Of course there have been some hits in the past year, however it’s wasn’t exactly the best year for gaming. If you ask me honestly, I think the video game companies have started slacking, and I’ll tell you why!

Patching, though originally a god send, has become nothing short of an excuse for video game companies to be lazy, and not test their games properly. It’s been very common within the gaming community lately, release a game that’s super buggy, then slowly release patch after patch that sometimes make the problems even worse. In my personal opinion patches should be a rare occurrence in the case of a bug used to abuse gameplay in someway, similar to the duplicate items bugs in RPGs recently. Other than that, a game released should be virtually bug free, and thoroughly tested. The developers of the past had only one shot, and they made it work, so why can’t current companies do the same?

Although we know and love a lot of them, video game companies need to stray away from “play it safe sequels”. We really need some new, original characters and storylines. Not every game is going to be a timeless classic like Mario, you can continue in any way you desire. In fact 2010 can only be defined by sequels like: Halo: Reach, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Mass Effect 2,Gears of War 2, God of War 3, ETC. Also 2011 is looking like a great year for gaming, because MORE sequels are on the way! It’s about time for you creators to actually do your job and think of something new!

Sub par story, and gameplay trying to be covered up with excellent graphics. It seems these days a lot of big name companies are so busy trying to one up each other in the graphics department, they completely ignore the concept of composing an good storylines reinforced by great gameplay. These days instead of, “Look how great our gameplay and control schemes are!” it’s, “Hey look at how well the water reflects, oh and check out how real our fire effects look”.

Downloadable Content. For something so unbelievable I’m only going to say this, let me get this straight, I paid sixty dollars for the game, and now you want me to pay fifteen more for a couple of extra maps? Riiiiiight, how ’bout no?

These are just a small part of where the big name companies are slipping. At the rate and direction we’re traveling, gaming may have a rather dark future ahead of it. We can only hope these companies start to pick up the slack and produce, new, fun, and well tested titles from now on. We as the consumers also need to know when to draw the line. If we’re continually served these lukewarm, bland, sad excusing for a video game, we need to complain to these companies directly and pass on their future releases.
