There are any number of reasons to be excited about Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad, and many of them can be found in five new movie stills released by Warner Bros. on the film’s official website.

The film stars Sean Penn as notorious LA gangster Mickey Cohen, who drew the attention of an unorthodox task force – the eponymous ‘Gangster Squad’ – in the 1940s. The trailer suggests a more over-the-top version of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, which certainly isn’t a comparison to shy away from. What has this writer excited, though, is the top-notch ensemble cast. They look darn good in these new images.

First, we’ve got Penn coming face-to-face with his pursuer, played by the always wonderful Josh Brolin. Last time these two shared the screen, Penn was playing famed Gay rights activist Harvey Milk, and Brolin his killer. It looks like the moral tables have turned:

Next, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone look to be reigniting their fiery, irresistible chemistry from Crazy Stupid Love:

Ryan Gosling solo, for the ladies:

Sean Penn firing a giant gun, for the guys:

That’s all for now, and it’s looking pretty good to me. If you’d like to see some of the other fine members of the ensemble in action, such as Anthony Mackie, Nick Nolte, Frank Grillo, Mireille Enos, and Michael Peña, I again urge you to check out the trailer.

Gangster Squad shoots its way into theatres September 7th.
