Five Reasons Why Kid Loki Deserves His Own Marvel Movie

If you’ve been keeping up with the Marvel movieverse, you’re well acquainted with Thor’s trickster half-brother Loki and his current state of muted imprisonment at the end of The Avengers. With Thor 2 hitting theatres in 2013, anticipation over whether Loki will redeem himself or revert to villainy has been traded back and forth, with no clear indicator of what side the villain will play for.

2. He’s Very Cool

Like everyone else on earth, Loki is fascinated with technology. Besides owning a Starkphone, he frequently visits online forums and has complained to Thor about being called “a troll.”

Loki’s willingness to delve into Midgardian media is further shown through his attempts at pop culture references, including jests at movies like James Bond, common television stereotypes, and desire to be “very cool.”

The success of exposing traditional figures like Captain America or mythological figures like Thor to everyday occurrences and classic facets of Western media has been a hit with Marvel movie audiences before. Steve’s proud claim to understand a reference and Thor’s “Another!” prove that showing Loki browsing Tumblr to give away a litter of hellhound puppies or wearing an “I Love London” T-Shirt is bound to have viewers charmed.

1. He Believes In Thor

The number one reason why Kid Loki deserves his own movie is his improved relationship with his brother. Their legendary fights in Thor and The Avengers are underscored by Thor’s obvious love for Loki. Despite Loki’s crimes and power-hungry attempts, Thor repeatedly tries to sway Loki away from hurting others, and Loki repeatedly pushes him away (often involving literal pushing or small knives).

Kid Loki is his adult counterpart’s polar opposite. After Thor went to great lengths to restore Loki’s identity, protected him from Asgard and Odin’s fury and treated him with kindness, Loki idolized and expressed love for Thor. During the Fear Itself event, Loki, knowing what Thor would have done, decided to prevent Asgard and Earth’s annihilation by rewriting the Serpent’s history, so as to allow a moment of weakness for Thor to kill the Serpent – and perish with him.

This event, although tragic, showed it was possible for Loki to truly act for good. Saving people who hated him and killing a brother who loved him showcased that Loki can struggle and do things to hurt Thor without outright hating him. Translating this character and this sort of relationship on screen would be a challenge, but if pulled off right, secures Loki as more than a typecast villain.

Seeing Loki reciprocate that fraternal affection would be a godsend for his character development, and would finally change their interactions from purely confrontational to something more brotherly. And as Loki himself says, change is a good thing.
