8 Spectacular Stories Which Marvel Should Adapt In Spider-Man: Homecoming

Tom Holland's Spider-Man will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Captain America: Civil War, but we only have to wait until next July to see him in action in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Following Peter Parker's high school adventures, the reboot is being directed by Cop Car's Jon Watts and pretty much everyone is expecting Marvel to get the wall-crawler right. To do so, they'll need to find the perfect storyline, and that's where this article comes in. Marvel's movies have so far adapted many comic book storylines, whether we're talking about "Extremis" in Iron Man 3 or "The Winter Soldier" in, well, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. They've taken some major liberties along the way of course, and I imagine that the same will be the case with Spider-Man: Homecoming, but there's material in each of the stories listed here which would give them a great starting point to make Spidey's next adventure truly amazing and spectacular. From well known classics to slightly more obscure storylines, all of these should be on the studio's list of possible directions to take the character in as he enters Phase 3 come July 2017. 8) The Death Of Jean DeWolff While Captain Stacy was included in both Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man, none of the previous movies have really explored the wall-crawler's relationship with the NYPD all that well. Giving Peter an ally on the force would be pretty interesting then, and if it leads to an adaptation of "The Death of Jean DeWolff," that would just be a bonus! The comic played out very much like a murder mystery after Spidey discovered Jean had been killed, and making the hunt for this serial killer a subplot in Spider-Man: Homecoming has a ton of potential, even if Jean doesn't actually fall victim to him until the sequel. Her relationship with Spider-Man is a fascinating one worth exploring, too, especially as he discovered she had feelings for him following her murder. That may not be appropriate here considering the fact Peter is just a teenager, but seeing these two interact in a movie is definitely a must. 7) Spider-Verse "Spider-Verse" featured Peter Parker meeting almost countless alternate versions of himself when a group of near immortal vampire like beings started travelling through the Multiverse in a bid to kill every Spider-Man, ever. To do so, this ancient family of mystical beings basically fed on all those different versions of the hero, leading to an army of Spider-Men assembling to stop them. Honestly, Spider-Man: Homecoming would be better off dropping pretty much all of that, but having the hero meet alternate reality versions of himself on the big screen is a must, especially if Sony still want to expand his world with various spinoffs (and let's face it, Spider-Man 2099 or Noir would be a million times better than Sinister Six or that Aunt May solo outing). Is it too soon to have the new Spidey meet other Spideys? Perhaps, but this could work really well with the right villain and could even lead to the introduction of Miles Morales. 6) The Six Arms Saga This storyline from the early 1970s touched on a lot of very heavy subjects, including Harry Osborn's drug addiction and the death of some of Spider-Man's closest allies. Believing that he needs to hang up his webs for good, Peter creates a concoction he thinks will get rid of his powers, only to wake up the next day with six arms instead of two. It's easy to imagine this young Peter going through a similar crisis of confidence in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and seeing as both The Lizard and Morbius, the Living Vampire ended up clashing with this six armed Spidey, there's a lot of great stuff Marvel and Sony could borrow from the source material for an adaptation of this tale. Throw in the uniqueness of seeing Spider-Man with six arms, and this could be a real winner, as it would be unlike anything we've ever seen before. 5) Legacy Norman and Harry Osborn were a huge part of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but that doesn't mean the Green Goblin should be left on the shelf. While it would be great to see Tom Holland's Peter Parker clashing with Norman (a villain with the potential to become a big bad of the Marvel Cinematic Universe if handled the right way) suited up in his classic green and purple costume, the whole Goblin glider look has still been done to death, so taking things in a drastically different direction is required. That's where this Ultimate Spider-Man tale could come in. "Legacy" featured a Norman who transformed himself into a hulking beast capable of throwing flames from his hands and flying through the air, and pitting the young hero against such a terrifying adversary would definitely be different to what we've seen in past instalments. 4) Kraven's Last Hunt Kraven the Hunter may not have the same flashy powers as some of Spider-Man's other villains, but he's someone that comic book fans are desperate to see on the big screen. The villain arriving in New York City to hunt down the young vigilante actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it, especially if he doesn't really step into the limelight until after the events of Captain America: Civil War. Jumping straight into "Kraven's Last Hunt" would be a smart move on Marvel's part as well and while the villain burying Peter alive and taking his place is a pretty dark direction to head in on the big screen, it would also be a great way to test the new Spidey and show from the very start that he's capable of overcoming the greatest of odds. This story deserves to be adapted sooner rather than later, and Spider-Man: Homecoming could do a lot worse than adapting such a critically acclaimed and iconic arc. 3) "The Scorpion" This one isn't a storyline as such, but The Scorpion's first appearance from way back in the 1960s could very easily be adapted for Spider-Man: Homecoming. Mac Gargan was a private eye hired by J. Jonah Jameson to discover the hero's secret identity, but the newspaper publisher ultimately decided to fund an experiment to transform him into The Scorpion when that plan failed. Unfortunately, Mac was driven mad in the process and ended up going after both Spider-Man AND Jonah, something which forced Peter to save the guy who created one of his greatest foes. An adaptation like this would establish JJJ and The Daily Bugle as an antagonist of sorts to Peter, and The Scorpion is most definitely a very cool bad guy from a powers/visual perspective. 2) Clone Saga If you're a fan of Spider-Man's comic book adventures, chances are that you probably want to forget the "Clone Saga" ever existed. A convoluted mess, Marvel and Sony would have to trim a lot of fat for this storyline to work in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but work it could. It was The Jackal - secretly Professor Miles Warren, one of Peter's college tutors - who cloned the hero, and he's a villain who has a lot of potential to be great on the big screen despite not being that well-known. Having the young Peter come face to face with another version of himself would be really interesting, too, and kicks open the door to at least one spinoff revolving around characters like Ben Reilly and Kaine. Make Miles a high school teacher, and this one would be pretty much good to go, though don't go expecting it to stick too closely to the source material. 1) Coming Home Does Homecoming "Coming Home"? It's certainly one possibility, but either way, this J. Michael Straczynski penned storyline is definitely worthy of being brought to the big screen. It introduced some mystical elements to Spider-Man's powers (something which would definitely work following the introduction of Doctor Strange), a mysterious new mentor in the form of Ezekiel (who has all the same abilities as the wall-crawler), and the damn near unstoppable villain Morlun. Determined to consume Spidey's essence, he pursued the hero through New York City in one of the character's lengthiest and most brutal showdowns ever. Throw in the fact that the story wrapped up with Peter's Aunt May discovering him unconscious and still suited up as Spider-Man, and this would be a great way to kick off the character's MCU adventures...
