7 Things We Learned From The Power Rangers Trailer

Ever since a movie reboot of 90s kids favourite Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was announced to be in the works over two years ago, fans have been split on the idea. Some have welcomed the idea of a modern take on the colour-coordinated cadets while others think a new version would lose the spirit of the original. What we really needed was a trailer to find out exactly what route the new movie would take.

7) They’re Keeping The Classic Theme

Simultaneously kitschy and catchy, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers theme is one of the most iconic childrens’ show themes of the 90s, and probably ever. Despite that, it had been clear that the new movie was not being made in the same spirit as the old show – perhaps even deliberately trying to distance itself from it – so we didn’t really expect to hear the tune in the trailer.

It’s a welcome surprise, then, that the teaser opens with a faint stirring of the classic theme. While we don’t go into full “Go Go Power Rangers!” territory, a few bars of it appear in the form of a low-key yet unmistakable guitar riff – leaving us excited to hear a new version of the theme in full in the movie. Obviously, it only plays for a few seconds, and so it could very well not be used in the film itself, but its inclusion here leaves us pretty certain that it will make its way into the reboot in some form.

Also, let’s be thankful the trailer didn’t fall into that modern cliche of including a slow, eerie version of the theme, as many recent reboots have (e.g. The Force Awakens, Ghostbusters).
