A blindingly obvious ‘mystery’ from a $400 million Marvel movie somehow still incites debate

Sometimes the answer is right there on screen.

There are a lot of questions that, even four years later, Avengers: Endgame left unanswered. Are those killed by the Infinity Stones really dead? Is Old Man Steve Rogers still alive? Why are there two Ant-Mans in the final battle? Still, not everything in the grand finale to the MCU’s Infinity Saga — which is estimated to have had a gargantuan budget of around $350-$400 million — is a big mystery. Even though people are insisting on debating the meaning of one scene that is pretty clearly depicted on screen.

As first posed by Redditor u/KawonSuggs on the r/MarvelStudios subreddit, the outcome of the Thanos vs. Scarlet Witch confrontation is being put to discussion. “If Thanos had not ordered his ship to rain fire on allies and enemies on the ground could Wanda have succeeded in killing him?” the OP asked. “That seems to be the only thing that saved him from her magic.”

Well, yes, that definitely does seem to be the intention by the filmmakers… given by, you know, how that’s pretty much spelled out for us. Thanos resorts to cheating and murdering his own troops in a desperate attempt to save his own skin!

Comments in WandaVision also handily make it a canon fact.

To be fair, a warranted conversation came out of this over exactly what Wanda was trying to do to Thanos. Was she struggling to kill him… or was she deliberately taking her time in causing him pain as revenge for Vision’s murder?

Although, if she was trying to kill him, we can forgive her taking a bit to do it as she just got reconstituted into existence… after having to destroy her own lover and an Infinity Stone. So, let’s cut the lady some slack.

Now that would’ve been something to see.

Scarlet Witch has practically been confirmed as the MCU’s most powerful human being at this point, so it’s high time we accepted that, yes, she could’ve killed Thanos. Whether she’ll be any help against Kang come Avengers: Secret Wars, though, now that’s a different question…
