Having gone down in the history books as one of the action genre’s most iconic figures decades ago, the last decade has seen Jackie Chan take some big swings and endure the severe misses that come as a result, with few going down in infamy harder of faster than Bleeding Steel.
Neatly described by one critic as “nonsensical garbage,” the overstuffed genre-bender did at least find reviewers and audiences in complete agreements over its merits, although identical Rotten Tomatoes approval ratings of 22 percent from both parties isn’t quite what anybody had in mind.
The preposterous $65 million spectacular cratered at the box office for good measure after failing to even rack up $50 million in ticket sales, and it’s easy to see why everyone avoided it like the plague. A sci-fi action blockbuster with cyberpunk trappings that was also drenched in conspiratorial undertones and slathered in Chan’s signature style of physical showmanship, Bleeding Steel was a total and utter shambles on every level.
For what it’s worth, though, streaming subscribers are surprisingly on board to discover what happens when Chan’s special agent finds out his long-missing daughter has been subjected to experimental biochemical procedures and partners up with a rogue hacker to unravel a mystery, with FlixPatrol naming Bleeding Steel as one of the most unlikely hits on iTunes this week.
It’s not even so bad it’s good, but rather a tonally jumbled mess that can’t decide what it wants to be, so tries to be all of them at once and fails miserably.
