It’s hardly controversial to say that the Multiverse Saga isn’t going down as well as the Infinity Saga, with the internet constantly clogged with debates from fans over why that is. One common criticism of the MCU’s Phase Four and counting is that there are too many multiversal shenanigans these days, in order to prop up the saga’s main plotline, which overshadows the individual stories being told.
However, a zoomed-out view of how the Multiverse Saga is shaping up proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that this argument is actually meaningless. In fact, Marvel is almost guilty of mislabeling this entire arc as it turns out calling it the Multiverse Saga is a huge misnomer. As a chart — which sorts every Marvel release since Avengers: Endgame into a “no multiverse” or “about the multiverse” column — makes clear, only five MCU projects to date are objectively about the multiverse.
The creator of the above chart made the curious choice to include Sony movies in their sorting, which is perhaps fair considering that both Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse confirmed Sony’s offerings take place in the same multiverse as the MCU. And yet, even you want to expand it out to the Sonyverse, that only makes eight multiversal projects since 2019.
Meanwhile, 15 Marvel releases have nothing to do with the multiverse whatsoever, either telling standalone Earthbound stories like, say, Secret Invasion or operating over in the cosmic side of the MCU, as with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
All in all, we can now safely say that the criticism the Multiverse Saga is swallowing up the MCU for the worse is fake news and is probably just a lie being spread around by the Skrulls.
