The subgenre used to be all the rage at the turn of the millennium and into the early-to-mid 2000s, but the teenage sex comedy has become fewer and farther between in recent years, but Netflix is looking to buck the trend with its latest in-house exclusive Hard Feelings.
Directed by Granz Henman, the story sounds fairly formulaic as two best friends navigate the trials, tribulations, ups, and downs of high school life while dealing with the typical urges that come with a teenager, not to mention the substantial elephant in the room that is their own burgeoning feelings for each other. You might know how it’s going to end up, but you’ll never be able to predict how it gets there.
While countless comedies have manifested their central conceits in a myriad of different ways, Hard Feelings swings for the fences by deciding that Tobias Schäfer’s Charly and Cosima Henman’s Paula won’t only engage in conversations with their own genitals – which are credited as Willy and Hoo-Ha respectively – but they’re going to talk back, and be voiced by different actors no less.
It’s a hell of a twist, and one that helps the film stand out from the pack, and appears to have made it must-see viewing for Netflix subscribers everywhere. Per FlixPatrol, Hard Feelings is sitting pretty as the fourth most-watched feature on the worldwide watch-list after penetrating the Top 10 in a massive 82 countries around the world, so the sex-crazed romp seems to be alive and well if it’s backed by the might of a market-leading streamer.
