Considering how colossal the horror genre truly is, it makes perfect sense as to why some projects get lost in the ever-moving pipeline and fail to reach a broader audience. This is precisely the case for Cobweb — a skin-crawling new horror/thriller from director Samuel Bodin, which is set to mark the filmmaker’s directorial debut. But despite horror fans’ constant need to eat up fresh-faced content like hotcakes, it now seems likely that most folks haven’t even heard of the movie.

Earlier today, horror website Bloody Disgusting revealed that the upcoming flick is officially R-rated for a fair amount of horror-esque violence and some foul language. The rating report proved to be a huge reminder to all of us that the horror movie exists, although perhaps its glaring kryptonite is that it’s being released in theaters on the same exact day as both Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. But with that kind of company, it’s certainly easy to be overshadowed.

With the upcoming thriller set to serve as Bodin’s feature debut, well-informed horror enthusiasts will remember French series Marianne — which terrified and tortured streaming subscribers during its Netflix run back in 2019. Unfortunately, those who took a strong liking to Bodin’s series will also remember that the series was canceled in 2020 after just one season.

Despite the cancellation, Bodin has otherwise kept his head high and collaborated with Lionsgate to deliver a unique horror experience that will undoubtedly make fans’ skin crawl. For those interested, Cobweb is set to haunt theaters starting July 21.
