Spider-Man fans hope the success of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will mark the dawn of a new era that will see Sony Pictures develop live-action adaptations of other spin-off franchises.
A die-hard webhead took to Twitter to criticize the film studio for missing the opportunity to explore Spider-Man 2099.
OP doubled down on his charge against Sony Pictures, giving Morbius and El Muerto two thumbs down.
Spider-Man 2099 tells the story of Miguel O’Hara, a pompous yet prodigious geneticist living in the post-heroic era. An accidental fusion of his DNA with a spider causes a fundamental alteration of O’Hara’s genetic code. The humbling metamorphosis leads to his transformation into Spider-Man 2099, a hero for the new age. The re-imagining of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s Spider-Man was conceptualized by writer Peter David and illustrated by artist Rick Leonardi. Marvel Comics released the Spider-Man 2099 comic book series in 1992.
Voiced by Oscar Icaac, O’Hara made his first foray into feature films in the end credits of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. A second appearance followed in Sony’s latest release Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Clearly, fans of the re-imagined Spidey would like to see more of O’Hara on the big screen. One Spider-Man aficionado also paid homage to Slingers, the teenage superheroes quartette who drew inspiration from the original web-crawler.
Enthusiasm reached new heights as fans demanded Sony scrap villain-related projects to focus on the development of films based on Spider-Man spin-offs.
Yet another fan suggested that Sony relinquish the rights for Peter Parker to Marvel and focus on the spin-off franchise.
The people have spoken on Twitter and at the box office. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swung into North American theaters and earned a mouthwatering $120.5 million opening. Bringing characters like Miles Morales and Miguel O’Hara to the big screen is set to be a veritable gold mine for Sony Pictures.
