In a recent interview with Vulture, Adam Driver declined to answer one question for fear of giving away spoilers for the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX. But seeing how eager fans are for details of next year’s trilogy-closer, it only figures that the internet is still combing this non-answer for clues.

The moment in question came when Driver was asked what he finds interesting about his character Kylo Ren, to which the star responded as follows:

“That’s hard to say because we’re working toward something in particular with that character. I don’t want to give anything away.”

While we somehow doubt that Driver’s currently getting a telling off from Disney for leaking intel, some fans are still scrutinizing this quote for its promise of big things to come for his character.

As it stands, the two most obvious paths that Episode IX could take with Kylo are to give him a redemption arc like Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi or push him further into the dark side like Anakin in Revenge of the Sith. And after The Last Jedi hinted at a little bit of both, it’s difficult to say whether Kylo’s going to end his next film evil or not.

Either way, it’s unlikely that things are going to conclude too happily for Ben Solo. After all, there’s a certain morality to this saga, and given all the people that Kylo’s already had a hand in killing, it’s unlikely that this trilogy-closer’s going to let him off the hook. As it stands, a heroic death in the vein of Vader’s finale is probably the best that this character can hope for.

But whatever the future holds for the erratic and indecisive villain, all will be revealed when Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.
