The fact Mel Gibson even continues to get work rubs a lot of people the wrong way, even if he’s been channeling the spirit of 2010s-era Nicolas Cage by signing on for virtually every B-tier action thriller that comes his way.
It’s more than a little ironic that his most high-profile role in a while is as big bad Cormac in upcoming prequel series The Continental: From the World of John Wick, with many fans vowing not to even give the three-part event the time of day based entirely in his involvement, while the producers skirted around the controversy by basically saying it’s got nothing to do with them.
Of course, barely a couple of months are legally obligated to pass without Gibson showing up in a terrible crime thriller, and based on the first spate of reviews and reactions, Confidential Informant fits that bill. It doesn’t have a single positive response on Rotten Tomatoes as of yet, but that’s to be expected when the misses drastically outnumber the hits among the two-time Academy Award winner’s recent filmography.
For any Blood Father, Boss Level, or Bandit, there are at least two or three like On the Line, Hot Seat, Agent Game, or Panama. This time out, Confidential Informant focuses on a detective suffering from cancer, who makes a deal with the titular snitch to get himself killed in the line of duty so that his family can receive a payout from the department upon his demise.
Does it go to plan? Of course it doesn’t, otherwise there’d be no point, but it doesn’t look as though anybody cares anyway.
