A lot of things are dividing fans over the new Spider-Man series, but few more than the decision to quickly move forward with multiple villains. The upcoming Amazing Spider-Man 2 has no fewer than three villains, which of course was part of the downfall of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3.
Sony’s intention is, once again, to eventually build towards The Sinister Six in The Amazing Spider-Man 4, which is due out in 2018. One thing they’ll need to button down first, however, is getting Andrew Garfield (Peter Parker) on board, as the actor is only set for the first three films as of now.
“I’m under contract for another one after this. As far as a fourth one? That’s not anything to do with me,” says Garfield.
Of course, it’s not likely that Sony will have any trouble getting the actor back for a fourth outing but it’s still surprising to see that they’ve already announced a fourth film without even having their main star signed on.
The Sinister Six is Spider-Man’s greatest threat, featuring a series of his most dangerous rogues including Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Mysterio, Electro, Venom, Kraven the Hunter, Rhino, and many more swapped out and replaced over the years. The team has seen many iterations with different leaders and complete personnel changes over the course of its dozens of appearances in comics and has made for some of Spider-Man’s most thrilling battles. T
he trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hints at most of these characters, so if the same rogues get continued through to the inception of the team (which is likely), we’ll probably see Doc Ock, Vulture, Shocker, Green Goblin, Rhino, and maybe Venom or Lizard. If Dr. Connors doesn’t return as Lizard, we’ll likely have another three villains waiting for us in The Amazing Spider-Man 3.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 finds Peter Parker continuing his romance with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) in the midst of his stints as the superhero Spider-Man. This time, he is met with three threats: Electro (Jamie Foxx), Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan) and Rhino (Paul Giamatti), who are all intent on destroying him. In between the skirmishes, Peter continues to search for clues regarding the research his parents were working on before disappearing when he was a child.
We’ll have a clearer image of what might happen in The Amazing Spider-Man 4Â when the second film releases on May 2nd, 2014.
