Amy Schumer May Have Found Her Next Director In Jonathan Levine

Amy Schumer is deservedly riding high on the success of her self-scripted movie, Trainwreck - in addition to her award-winning, Emmy nominated TV show, Inside Amy Schumer. This being the case, the world has been awaiting news of her next film project – and it seems that project may have found itself a director, in the form of Jonathan Levine (50/50, Warm Bodies).

Amy Schumer is deservedly riding high on the success of her self-scripted movie, Trainwreck – in addition to her award-winning, Emmy nominated TV show, Inside Amy Schumer. This being the case, the world has been awaiting news of her next film project – and it seems that project may have found itself a director, in the form of Jonathan Levine (50/50, Warm Bodies).

Since his well-received romantic zombie comedy in 2013, Levine has been kicking his heels in television, until moving back to feature film with the upcoming Seth Rogen-Joseph Gordon-Levitt comedy, The Night Before. Though he has not yet officially signed on for Amy Schumer’s next movie, Levine is reportedly close to a deal on the project.

The film in question is currently untitled, but will apparently revolve around the relationship between a mother and daughter, as that connection comes under the pressure of extreme circumstances, when an exotic vacation goes awry. Amy Schumer is in the lead role – presumably that of the daughter – leaving the role of the mother open for the casting. It will be interesting to see which of the many highly experienced actresses working today will be tapped to play this character, and what steps the filmmakers will take to ensure this doesn’t emulate the mother-daughter road-trip comedy Tammy too closely. Would an Amy Schumer/Meryl Streep combination be too much to hope for?

This Amy Schumer project features an original script which, though reworked by Schumer and Kim Caramele, was written by Katie Dippold. As the pen behind The Heat and the new, female-led Ghostbusters reboot, Dippold is noteworthy for writing fantastic female characters who have real and complex relationships with each other – which is vital in a mother-daughter comedy. In addition, the film is being produced by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat, Ghostbusters) and Peter Chernin, whose work on the Planet Of The Apes franchise has him well-placed to oversee an action movie.

This forthcoming Amy Schumer project may not have a title, or a shooting date, or a release date, for that matter – but it is safe to say that 20th Century Fox will be looking to move quickly on this, to capitalize on Schumer’s current upward trajectory. We will have to wait patiently to hear who will be joining her on this troubled vacation, though.
