Calls for Morbius to be rebooted sound inherently insane when it’s only been a year since Jared Leto’s introduction as “A New Marvel Legend” tanked twice over at the box office and became a figure of widespread mockery for much more for the mountain of memes it generated.
And yet, the mere mention by the always reliable and ever-popular David Dastmalchian admitting that it’s the comic book role he’d love to play above all others has ignited calls for Sony to pretend like Daniel Espinosa’s critical and commercial dud never existed, wipe the slate clean, and start afresh with an actor that people actually like in the title role.
To be fair, the prospect of a Dastmalchian-led Morbius sounds infinitely more appealing than watching Leto go full method on his way to Razzie Awards glory, and it’s about time the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DCU veteran was given a major leading role after consistently knocking it out of the park for over a decade in smaller supporting parts.
The bad news is that it’s way too soon to be giving Morbius the full-blown reboot treatment, but you get the sneaking suspicion that Dastmalchian is a patient man. Then again, if we can see Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland all headlining a standalone Spider-Man blockbuster with the space of 10 years from Spider-Man 3 through to Homecoming, then maybe a rapid-fire overhaul for the Living Vampire isn’t entirely out of the question.
Sony makes plenty of rash decisions with its Marvel properties, but this is one everyone could get on board with.
