An insanely stacked action thriller that dropped an A-list crew into a stodgy flop burns rubber on streaming

All that talent, and this was the best they could come up with?

A talented filmmaker, an eye-catching high concept premise, and a star-studded ensemble cast is usually more than enough to guarantee an exciting time at the movies, which leaves us with many questions as to what happened with Triple 9.

The Proposition and The Road‘s John Hillcoat was wielding the megaphone on a bruising action thriller that revolved around a bank heist committed in broad daylight. A ruthless crime boss orders her underlings to pull off the dangerous job, but one of them happens to be a crooked cop stuck with a straight arrow partner, forcing lines to be drawn on both sides of the law before the bullets even get a chance to start flying.

In order to tell the story, Triple 9 recruited a murderer’s row of top talent that included Casey Affleck, Anthony Mackie, Chiwitel Ejiofor, Woody Harrelson, Aaron Paul, Kate Winslet, Gal Gadot, Norman Reedus, Michael K. Williams, Clifton Collins Jr., and many more, which is a quite frankly preposterous roster.

All that wattage wasn’t worth a thing in the end, though, after Triple 9 sank without a trace at the box office by barely recouping its $25 million budget, while the reception from both critics and audiences was generously lukewarm at best. Then again, A-listers always draw in a crowd on streaming, which would go some way to explaining why the stodgy heist flick has been shaken out of its stupor to be named as one of the Top 10 most-watched titles on the OSN platform this week, per FlixPatrol.
