While Andrew Garfield’s attention has been firmly focused on the upcoming indie drama 99 Homes — in which he plays a down-on-his-luck estate broker — the star took time to address some Spider-Man-related speculation during the Toronto Film Festival.

Speaking with the Tornoto Sun, he touched upon whether or not Peter Parker will weave his way into the upcoming villain-centric Sinister Six movie — written and directed by Cabin In The Woods scribe, Drew Goddard— and provided us with as vague an answer as you’d expect.

“I know more than I’m allowed to say right now. I can say I’m really excited about Drew Goddard, who’s going to be writing and directing…Whether I’m involved in that or not is kind of immaterial.”

Quite frankly, Garfield hits the nail on the head. Marvel’s comic book portrayal of the Sinister Six is primarily focused on the dynamic between the titular band of bad guys and their attempts to foil New York’s renown web crawler. This means that the familiar Hollywood arc is inverted and Spider-Man is essentially pegged as an overhanging villain.

Still, given the gravitas of the sarcastic, spandex-clad hero, it’s difficult to imagine Sony wholly committing to a film from the Spider-Man universe without the need for Spider-Man himself. Referencing Andrew Garfield’s character off-screen in Sinister Six is readily expected and a potentially neat way to skate around the conundrum, but chances are the actor will still manage to creep onto the scene for a minor role for the sake of the general audience.

Now that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 has been pushed back to 2018, the Sinister Six film will help sate the appetite of Spidey fans — along with the confirmed Venom spin-off — when it hits theatres on November 11th, 2016.
