A HUGE win!

The 80th Golden Globes opened to nothing but furor unfolding about the show so far. From Jerrod Carmichael not pulling any punches with his opening monologue, to Ke Huy Quan’s moving acceptance speech for his role in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

However, the hype around the accolade that followed was certainly tough to top – because Angela Bassett took the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in any Motion Picture for her role as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, marking the first time such an award has gone to an actor or actress in a Marvel film.

It would seem that Bassett herself was blindsided by her win, with Marvel movies traditionally making bank at the box office, but rarely taking home many accolades outside of the occasional special effects win here and there. The actress took to the stage in shock, whipping out her phone to look at her notes while delivering her acceptance speech.

Naturally, the actress made mention of and honored the late Chadwick Boseman, who played the titular hero T’Challa in the original 2018 film and the Avengers movies. Bassett went on to thank the Marvel fans that embraced the characters in the Black Panther universe, which led to the very first Golden Globe for an actor or actress in a Marvel movie.

This was Bassett’s second nomination and second win since 1994 for her role in What’s Love Got to Do With It?, and the Twitter user below took the liberty of sharing side-by-side shots of the actress taking the stage on that occasion, and again tonight:

Bassett’s award was well and truly deserved, absolutely owning all of her scenes in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as a grieving matriarch who is petrified of losing more of her family, and we’re all here for it.
