One day, there may come a time when a horror franchise is allowed to die peacefully and be left to its eternal slumber, but the evidence keeps piling up that it won’t be happening at any point in the near future. For those desperate to see another Leprechaun movie, though, you’re in luck.

Despite spitting out eight installments over the course of the last 30 years – the majority of which have been resoundingly trashed by even the most ardent of supporters – the danger of a fresh coat of paint is always lurking in the shadows when it comes to any spooky saga that’s been laying dormant for what studio executives deem to be too long.

In the case of Leprechaun, it’s been five whole years since Returns, which is evidently outrageous. Per Deadline, Felipe Vargas is on hand to direct the latest entry in the never-ending series, with Mike Van Waes – fresh from penning Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch remake of all things – tapped to write the screenplay.

If we take the critical consensus into account, it leads to questions over who exactly is clamoring for more Leprechaun in their lives. While Returns may have been the best-reviewed of the lot on Rotten Tomatoes, an approval rating of 44 percent is being damned with faint praise. As for the rest? Well, respective scores of 27, 6, 0, 17, 33, 20, and 0 underlines the futility.

Obviously, there’s always the chance it could turn out to be a classic, but based on its entire existence so far; that’s an approach that’s best left to determine once the end product eventually arrives.
