Aquaman Topples Avengers: Infinity War And Deadpool 2 With New Pre-Sales Record

Aquaman is still over a week away from reaching North American theaters, but Arthur Curry’s solo debut already holds a few commercial records worth bragging about. As well as earning the best opening in the China of any DC movie to date, James Wan’s flick has beaten the likes of Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2 to sell more advance tickets on Atom Tickets than any other film.

As well as earning the best opening in China of any DC movie to date, James Wan’s flick has beaten the likes of Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2 to sell more advance tickets on Atom Tickets than any other film in the site’s history.

To put this achievement into context, a significant factor here is the exclusive offer to Amazon Prime members, which allows people to buy tickets on Atom for special screenings happening one week before the feature’s actual release. Still, it’s a promising sign of things to comes for the upcoming Warner Bros. film, prompting Atom Tickets co-founder and chairman Matthew Bakal to celebrate the news in a recent statement:

“Clearly, Aquaman has captured the attention of movie fans with its larger-than-life adventure that must be seen on the big screen.”

The DCEU’s next entry is following on from the commercial letdown that was last year’s Justice League, but if Zack Snyder’s ensemble flick suggested that the studio may need to rethink its approach to the superhero saga, the ongoing success of Aquaman suggests that there’s still plenty of potential in the old team’s cast. Who knows, maybe there’s still hope for the Cyborg movie yet.

In any case, with the film projected to take in upwards of $65 million domestically in its opening weekend, it’s certainly looking like Arthur himself will have a follow-up or two left in him, and according to one report from last week, sequel talks at Warner have already begun. We’ll find out if Aquaman can sustain its franchise-worthy momentum when the film hits theaters on December 21st.
