Ben Affleck got some vindication for being snubbed out of an Oscar nomination tonight at the 70th Golden Globe Awards where he was named Best Director and his film Argo was named Best Motion Picture – Drama.
It’s a crime that Affleck wasn’t nominated for Best Director by the Academy, but at least he can walk away with the well deserved Globe for that category. Argo was a sharp, nearly flawless piece of film making, and I’m very happy to see it get the win for Best Motion Picture, despite the fact that the victory over Lincoln comes as a bit of a surprise.
Really, it’s hard to say that I disagree with the picks in any of the major categories here. Les Miserables, the winner of the Best Motion Picture — Comedy or Musical, while not my favorite film of the year, was certainly a quality film that screamed award contender. The awards tonight definitely will not be the last of the season for Tom Hooper’s film.
As for Daniel Day-Lewis, he was almost a no-brainer for the Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama category, as his performance as Abraham Lincoln will certainly go down in cinematic history. Not as obvious a choice, but still as deserved, was the Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama, which went to Christoph Waltz for his brilliant performance as Dr. King Schultz in Quentin Tarantino’s wild western Django Unchained.
