I was one of the many that sat in the theater, head in hands, as I watched X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It was a mess of a script, a trash of a story, and served not one purpose in story that is Wolverine. Needless to say, I wasn’t looking forward to the sequel, even when Darren Aronofsky was given the director’s chair for the upcoming sequel titled, The Wolverine. That is, until now.Aronofsky has stated that:
“I think I’m being hired because of who I am; I’m not being hired to turn into someone. I’m being hired to do what I do. I don’t know exactly if [Fox head Tom Rothman] knows what he’s bought, but we’re going to make something great.” I’m just trying to have fun, and for the first time in my life…Every single film I’ve done so far, I’ve been the only person in the room who wants to make the movie,” he told David Poland. “And I kind of am excited about doing a film where actually everyone wants to make it — just to see what the experience is like and see if I can do what I do in that world. It’s not like I’m going to change my process. I’m going to be working with the same team and making…really trying to do something very, very different.”
Strong words, even though Rothman is notorious for screwing movies up. This is the same guy who blamed the mess that was Origins on the fans saying they had to change things to make Origins more acceptable to the non-fans.
This could get interesting, maybe Aronofsky can actually pull out a good movie without the usual interference of Fox. Aronofsky’s words armed with the knowledge that this won’t be a sequel in the conventional sense has me excited, but then again, only time will tell how this one turns out.
