Throughout his 40 years as one of the biggest stars in the business, Tom Cruise has outlasted his fair share of tends and crazes, with superhero fatigue next on his hit-list.
While several high-profile comic book adaptations – including Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and The Flash – have all drastically under-performed among audiences, Cruise is arguably getting more popular. Coming off the back of the biggest hit of his entire career in Top Gun: Maverick, the A-list daredevil’s next venture is also on course to set records.
According to the most recent tracking, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is heading towards a domestic opening weekend in the $90 million range, which would be a franchise-high by far. Not only is that an incredible achievement for a saga that kicked off all the way back in the summer of 1995, but it’s also set to easily dwarf the previous benchmark set by Fallout‘s $61 million bow.
While it’s incredibly unlikely Dead Reckoning will come close to matching Maverick‘s $1.5 billion haul, it’s well-placed to wind up as the top-earning Mission: Impossible movie ever. Fallout also holds that distinction by way of a $791 million tally, but if there’s one person who can prove beyond reasonable doubt that there’s no such thing as fatigue amongst audience for expensive and effects-heavy blockbusters, then bets don’t come much surer than Tom Cruise.
Quality always tends to win out in the end, and if Christopher McQuarrie has another instant classic up his sleeve, then we’re all in for a treat.
