UPDATE: It’s being reported that Butterfield is not a lock just yet and that he’s simply the favorite and is close to signing a deal. However, it’s still possible that the role may go to someone else.
ORIGINAL STORY:
Asa Butterfield has reportedly been chosen to play Spider-Man in the upcoming reboot. The actor was said to be the frontrunner not too long ago, after appearing on a shortlist, and according to El Mayimbe, he has now been chosen for the role.
It’s important to note that neither Marvel or Sony have put out a press release confirming this just yet, but El Mayimbe is rarely, if ever, wrong, and considering that Butterfield was on the shortlist and said to be the frontrunner, there’s no real reason to doubt this report. However, until we get official confirmation, don’t consider this to be set in stone.
[zerg]For those unfamiliar with the actor, Asa Butterfield first really made a name for himself in Martin Scorsese’s Hugo and has since gone on to prove himself to be one of Hollywood’s most promising young talents, appearing in films like Ender’s Game and A Brilliant Young Mind. Spider-Man will no doubt be his biggest role to date, but seeing as he was my personal choice for the part out of all the names that appeared on the shortlist, I’m happy to see that he’s been selected and have full confidence in him to deliver a worthy take on the iconic character.
Butterfield will first appear as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, which hits theatres next May. He’ll then have his own standalone film, which is set to arrive on July 28, 2017.
