Well, it looks like Avatar fans are being given the gift of certainty this Labor Day, as the sequel mystery surrounding James Cameron‘s highly revered (future) franchise has finally been cleared up.

First Showing is reporting that producer Jon Landau has confirmed Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 will be shot back to back as planned, but Avatar 4 will not be shot at the same time.

Cameron’s plans were always to shoot all the Avatar sequels back to back, and he’d been hinting that three more sequels could be seen in the near future, stating “I’m making ‘Avatar 2,’ ‘Avatar 3,’ maybe ‘Avatar 4.”

Sigourney Weaver only furthered those rumors by claiming all three sequels would be shot at once, just as Cameron had been teasing.

While we now know that only two sequels will be shot at once, Sigourney and James may not be entirely wrong. An Avatar 4 could certainly be greenlit after two more Avatar features, as long as box office numbers warrant another franchise entry.

While fans already have to wait until 2015 for a return to Pandora, confirmation on shooting at the very least means that there’s more of a chance that Cameron can stay on the proposed release dates for the two announced sequels.

The veteran director has already stressed what challenges production will face just trying to meet the intended deadlines, so take a 2015 date with a small grain of salt, but fans can at least rejoice that progress is publicly moving forward.

James Cameron’s visual masterpiece Avatar sent some fans into a euphoric state of obsession, so hearing at least two more sequels are coming their way should make up for the vague state of a fourth.

Fans also have to remember the laborious amount of effort that went into making Avatar, a visually stunning 3D dream world which deserved every bit of CGI praise.

Patience is a virtue, and something James Cameron has rewarded us for time and time again – Avatar 2 being the next treat he’ll dangle in front of us until 2015.

What do you guys think, can James Cameron have Avatar 2 ready for 2015 while delivering another awe-inspiring journey?
