It’s long been theorized that Avengers 4 would have a time travel element. Set photos and videos have teased that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes might revisit moments from their past, allowing for the film to act as a kind of celebration of how far the MCU has come over the past decade. And now, a new casting report suggests that the Avengers will travel to the future in order to meet the next generation of heroes.
According to That Hashtag Show, 16-year-old actress Emma Fuhrmann has been cast as Cassie Lang in Avengers 4. Avid Marvel viewers should recognize that name, as we previously met Cassie as Scott Lang’s young daughter in Ant-Man, as played by the 10-year-old Abby Ryder Fortson, who will reprise her role in this July’s Ant-Man and the Wasp as well. Fuhrmann was first tied to the production via an IMDB credit, which THS has confirmed is official thanks to an insider source.
So, what could be the importance of Cassie being recast with an older actress in Avengers 4? Well, comic fans will know that Cassie follows in her dad’s tiny/giant footsteps on the page and has gone by the superhero monikers Stature and Stinger. In particular, she serves on the Young Avengers team alongside other adolescent heroes like Hulking, Wiccan and Speed. The fact that we might soon be meeting a teenage Cassie gives us the impression that Avengers 4 is going to hint at what the future of the MCU could hold.
Of course, there isn’t anything to overtly suggest that the Young Avengers are being set up for Phase Four, so we obviously shouldn’t get too carried away just yet. Likewise, THS mentions that they’ve not received any comment on Fuhrmann’s casting from Marvel or the actress’ management, so it’s possible that she’s not playing Cassie at all and someone’s got their wires crossed somewhere along the line.
For now, let’s forget about the past and the future and just focus on the present, as we’ve still got Avengers: Infinity War to enjoy when it arrives on April 27th, before Avengers 4 hits cinemas a year later, on May 3rd, 2019.
