Marvel Studios has been disproving a lot of fan theories in these last few days, from alleged Avengers: Infinity War Easter Eggs to the internet’s many predictions on when the first Avengers 4 trailer might drop, but now director Joe Russo has probably helped spawn a whole new line of speculation with his tease that Chris Evans still has a future in this franchise.

In an interview with ET Canada, Russo touched on the subject of the man known for playing Captain America, and while it remains one of the most popular Avengers 4 predictions that the upcoming film will serve as Evans’ grand finale, the filmmaker has offered the cryptic claim that “he’s not done yet, and I won’t explain what that means but the audience will soon understand what I’m talking about.”

Let’s make one thing clear. This is not some Tom Holland-style instance of careless spoiler-dropping. Joe Russo wants to get the fans and the forums talking, and of course, we’re going to give him just that.

One of the many reasons why it’s seemed so probable that Avengers 4 would serve as Evans’ last MCU entry was a matter of contractual obligations. Though the actor has already starred in the six movies originally stipulated in his agreement, Evans has said that he chose to extend his run in the franchise to next year’s release to help send off Marvel’s Phase 3. Once the Infinity War sequel arrives in cinemas, however, many have assumed that both Steve Rogers and the man who plays him will both have the closure they need to walk away.

Of course, in light of Russo’s new statement, a lot of fans will likely be rethinking their forecasts, but as the director himself teases, all will be revealed when Avengers 4 hits theaters on May 3rd, 2019
