Though it’s remained under lockdown ever since it was tentatively announced as Infinity War – Part II all those years ago, for Marvel Studios, Avengers 4 signals the end of one era and the beginning of the next.

And that’s not just some off-the-cuff guess; one glance at the MCU slate tells us that Joe and Anthony Russo’s conclusive blockbuster exists on the precipice between Phase 3 and the super-secret Phase 4, which is due to kick off with the launch of Jon Watt’s Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel next summer.

Couple this with the nail-biting finale of Infinity War and it’s fair to say that the Russo Brothers have their work cut out if they’re to deliver a worthy follow-up to 2018’s biggest movie. However that may be, Black Panther producer and all-around MCU veteran Nate Moore believes the subsequent era of Marvel movies will be “surprising and refreshing.”

I think it’s an opportunity for us to bid a fond farewell to characters that we’ve come to know for a while, but to also then introduce characters who are going to feel completely new and hopefully surprising to both our core fans and fans of our movies who aren’t as well-versed in publishing.

It’s a future-proofing scheme that’s already in motion, what with Matthew and Ryan Firpo spearheading The Eternals and MCU boss Kevin Feige waxing lyrical about Marvel movies from now until 2025. Suffice it to say, the superhero series still has plenty of gas left in the tank, and Moore is confident that blue-sky thinking will ensure Marvel’s juggernaut stays clear of franchise fatigue.

There are great ideas out there that we’ve talked about internally that I think and I hope will be surprising and refreshing to audiences while we still continue to explore characters we’ve come to love. The new ones always feel really exciting because they can be anything. We’re at the point now where we’re blue-skying, what are the best stories to tell, and in that blue sky there are ideas that I think all of us get really excited to share with people.

With Infinity War now out in the wild, look for Avengers 4 to complete the one-two punch next May.
