A new fan theory is asserting that Black Widow's tenure in the MCU may come to an end once Avengers 4 launches into theaters in 2019.

Like a valve slowly releasing pressure after months of pent-up excitement, five days ago Marvel Studios launched the initial teaser trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, and the Internet hasn’t been the same since.

Indeed, not even a week has passed since the big reveal, and the pipes of social media are already clogged with nine kinds of fan theories – who lives, who dies…that kinda’ thing. Adding fuel to the fire is the oncoming Avengers 4, which is still lensing across parts of Atlanta.

Because the sequel’s production is expected to span long into 2018, some have already gone ahead and identified which heroes have been spotted on the Avengers 4 set and put two and two together: if an Avenger is filming scenes for Joe and Anthony Russo’s untitled sequel, then they’ll surely make it out of Infinity War alive.

The Russo Brothers know who they’re allowed to kill, too, which has only left Marvel fans on tenterhooks. But a new fan theory is asserting that Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) already has one eye on the exit door.

Pointing to Vanity Fair’s recent exposé, fans have stipulated that Johansson actually teased her imminent departure before the big trailer drop, as the actress recalled the “bittersweet” feeling of bringing Marvel’s 10-year movie arc to a close. And that’s just it, Johansson may be referring to the fact that Avengers 4 signals the end of an era – rather than the era of Black Widow.

See for yourself:

It’s bittersweet to imagine not having these films to come back to. I’ve been living this story with these people for 10 years through ups and downs. We’ve built a great family. Personally, it feels like a loss. It’s very surreal for me to watch these new cast members come in and get their feet wet and breath new life into these characters who are so iconic. I feel a lot of joy for the next generation. It’s a bittersweet feeling but overall it’s a positive one. I feel good about the work we’ve done and the work I’ve done.

Said to be an “unprecedented cinematic journey 10 years in the making,” Infinity War will get the ball rolling in 2018, before Avengers 4 delivers the second, conclusive chapter in the war against Thanos on May 3rd, 2019.
