One of the most tragic moments in Avengers: Infinity War was the death of Gamora at the hands of her own adoptive father Thanos. Even though the Mad Titan didn’t want to kill the only thing he loved, he had to (well, in his mind) to claim the Soul Stone. Thankfully, we’re pretty sure this death is going to be reversed in Avengers 4, which all the evidence suggests will feature the leftover heroes traveling back in time to collect the Infinity Stones before Thanos can.
One Reddit user has put forward the theory, though, that just because Gamora may be saved doesn’t mean that someone else won’t die in her place. After all, if the Avengers are going to have to hunt down the six gems before Thanos then they’ll need to sacrifice someone in order to get the Soul Stone from Red Skull, too. But who would give their life up to save Gamora? The answer, says this fan, is obvious. It’s her sister, Nebula.
Here’s how the theory goes:
“If the Avengers do go back in time and get each Infinity Stone to reverse the snap, we run into a problem: The Soul Stone.
You have to sacrifice someone you truly love in order to get it and here’s where Gamora & Nebula come into play.
Say they do go back in time; well future Nebula will tell past Gamora what Thanos does in the future and they go to retrieve the Soul Stone on Vormir.
They are told the price and here’s what happens: Nebula shares a touching/emotional moment with Gamora before she forces Gamora to push her off the ledge.
I think it will happen for 1 main reason: It fulfills Nebula’s character arc, a pessimistic assassin with a hatred for life and her sister, who ends up sacrificing herself for the greater good of the universe and to save her sister. The only thing she ever wanted.”
Some fans may point out that this turn of events isn’t likely as, in the comics, Nebula’s actually the one to take the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos, something that’s been theorized to happen in Avengers 4 as well. However, while that is a possibility, we highly suspect this important job will be given to someone like Iron Man or Captain America instead.
Arguably, this tragic self-sacrifice would be an even better end for Nebula’s character. Like the theorist says, it’d give the Guardian of the Galaxy redemption for her past villainous actions, in a similar way to Loki’s death at the beginning of Infinity War did.
This is definitely one of the more believable predictions out there, but we’ll have to see how things play out when Avengers 4 hits cinemas next year.
